Experience with ATM switch performance testing

چکیده
For users to be able to compare performance of different switches, it is important to have a common set of metrics. Examples of several such metrics and their measurements are presented in this paper. These measurements and metrics have impacted standardization efforts in this area. The key distinguishing feature of our effort is its emphasis on frame-level metrics (rather than cell-level metrics of the past). In particular, in this paper, we present definitions, methodologies, and measured results for frame latency, throughput, and maximum frame burst size (MFBS).

MPOA Performance Benchmark and Functionality Verification
IBM Corp. commissioned The Tolly Group to evaluate its 8265 Nways ATM Switch and 8371 Multilayer Ethernet Switch. In an extensive suite of tests, IBM’s 8265 ATM switch provided LANE and MPOA backbone services to Fast Ethernet switch ports residing both in standalone IBM 8371 switches, as well as in IBM 8371 switch blades for the 8265. The testing involved Layer 2 and Layer 3 IP throughput, as w...
متن کاملExperiences with TCP/IP over an ATM OC12 WAN
This paper discusses the performance testing experiences of a 622.08 Mbps OC12 link. The link will be used for large bulk data transfer, and as such, of interest are both the ATM level throughput rates and end-to-end TCP/IP throughput rates. Tests were done to evaluate the ATM switches, the IP routers, the end hosts, as well as the underlying ATM service provided by the carrier. A low level of ...
متن کاملMethodology for implementing scalable test configurations in ATM switches
In performance testing of ATM switches and network of switches a variety of connection configurations is needed. In most of the cases, these configurations require one traffic generator and/or analyzer for each switch port. Since this equipment is rather expensive, it is desirable to define scalable configurations that can be used with a limited number of generators. In this paper we present a ...
متن کاملImproving performance of TCP over ATM - UBR service 1 UBR + : Improving Performance of TCP over ATM - UBR service 1
ATM-UBR switches respond to congestion by dropping cells when their buuers become full. TCP connections running over UBR experience low throughput and high unfairness. For 100% TCP throughput each switch needs buuers equal to the sum of the window sizes of all the TCP connections. Intelligent drop policies can improve the performance of TCP over UBR with limited buuers. The UBR+ service propose...
متن کاملATM Performance Testing and QoS Management
ATM technology is now being deployed in operational networks. Most of the specifications required for operation have been developed. This includes signaling (UNI 4.0), routing (PNNI 1.0), traffic management (TM 4.0), numerous physical layer, network management, and testing specifications. As the technology moves from the laboratories to the field, the users have a need to benchmark and compare ...
